‘Professor Woland’s Black Magic Rock Show’

October 25 - November 2, 2024

Directed by Elizabeth Dinkova
Music by Michael Pemberton
Lyrics by Michael and Andrea Pemberton
Book by Elizabeth Dinkova and Jesse Rasmussen

A rock musical based on Mikhail Bulgakov’s banned classic The Master and Margarita, Professor Woland’s Black Magic Rock Show takes inspiration from the courageous resistance of dissident artists like Pussy Riot to explore the potency and peril of speaking truth to power, the relationship between good and evil, and the freedom of the spirit in an unfree world.

In 1930s Moscow, the Master—an idealistic writer—is silenced and detained in an asylum. Margarita, his collaborator and lover, embarks on a quest through heaven and hell to save him and his manuscript.

Our guides are Satan himself (in the guise of a mysterious gentleman-magician named Professor Woland) and his retinue of demonic rock musicians who aim to wreak havoc on a society filled with corrupt social climbers, bureaucrats and profiteers.

‘The Seagull’

February 28 - March 2, 2025

By Anton Chekhov
Translation by Paul Schmidt
Directed by Sammy Zeisel

In this fiercely contemporary production, a troupe of college students performs The Seagull. They fall in love, break each other’s hearts, and find their voices. Along the way, some cultivate the strength to survive in a dispiriting world while others fall between the cracks.

Infused with indie rock and irreverent make-believe, this reimagined version will examine what it means to be young in a polarized, image-obsessed society in which ambition and celebrity are fetishized with often deadly costs to young people. The year is 1895 and 2025: the kids are not alright.

This is an opportunity for students to try out playwriting and directing and practice working with actors in a supportive environment. All experience levels are welcome.
The ability to embrace uncertainly and change as creative engines is a critical skill for any 21st-century career. The New Play Lab is serious fun.
